Root Cause Kwanza (RCK) is a Kenyan community-based organization that grew out of one founder’s lived experience in Kibera slums. It is built on a simple, powerful idea: tackle the “root” causes of poverty first. This approach enables young people to learn, thrive, and break the cycle of poverty. The organization addresses systemic issues that perpetuate poverty, such as lack of access to quality education and healthcare. By ensuring that children in these communities are given the tools needed to succeed, RCK aims to create lasting change.
“Kwanza” means “first” in Swahili, and the team uses it to signal their priority: address the foundational barriers to education and well-being before they harden into lifelong disadvantages. This proactive approach is essential in breaking the cycle of poverty and ensuring that children can access opportunities that were once out of reach.

Fittingly, RCK sits just a stone’s throw from Nairobi National Park, where the city skyline rises behind its wildlife, perfectly blending adventure and impact.
Jacob grew up in Kibera without parents and very little to hold on to. Hunger, insecurity, and uncertainty were daily companions. He often asked classmates if he could go home with them hoping for a meal or and a place to rest. At home, there was nothing at all- a reality mot unique to Jacob alone but many children in the slum.
At his lowest point, Adventure Out Loud stepped in as his sponsor. They took him through school and university, giving him the stability to focus on learning instead of just surviving.
Jacob graduated as one of the top students in his class, found meaningful work, and rebuilt his life with dignity. He started by making sure his own siblings could access the education he once almost lost, showcasing the ripple effect that one individual’s success can have on an entire family.
Today, Jacob’s journey is the heartbeat of Root Cause Kwanza (RCK). He founded RCK so his story would not remain just his own. He aims to become an anchor of hope for children growing up like he did in Kibera and similar communities. Jacob wants every child to know that one real chance can change a life. Through various programs, RCK ensures that every child has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their background.
RCK is built on Jacob’s lived truth: give a child, a young person, or an individual a real chance, and they can change their story. The dual approach asks one more question: how do we ensure fewer children end up in that desperate place to begin with? This proactive question drives the development of new initiatives aimed at preventing poverty before it starts.
On one side, RCK supports children already living in informal settlements like Kibera through education sponsorships, uniforms, school fees, and essential learning infrastructure. This includes labs, libraries, and sanitation facilities. By investing in educational infrastructure, RCK creates a learning environment that fosters academic growth and personal development.
On the other side, RCK invests in rural villages to improve access to education, opportunity, and basic services. This helps families avoid feeling forced to migrate to cities in search of a better life. This holistic approach addresses the root causes of urban migration by empowering rural communities.
This is why the “root” in Root Cause Kwanza matters. Rapid rural to urban migration is a key driver of slum mushrooming in Kenya. As people move to cities seeking work, schools, and services, informal settlements expand faster than infrastructure can cope, deepening poverty and vulnerability. By strengthening rural communities while caring for children already in the slums, RCK tackles both the symptom and the cause, ultimately working toward sustainable development.
