Zanzibar's Seasons Explained
Zanzibar enjoys a tropical climate with sunshine year-round, but the island’s seasons are influenced by short and long rainy periods. Here is what you need to know:
June–October: Cool, dry, ideal for beach holidays
December–February: Hot, sunny, festive
November: Short rains, fewer tourists
March–May: Long heavy rains (peak in April–May), fewest tourists, lowest rates
Aloyce always says, "The sun never really leaves Zanzibar, but knowing when the rains come helps you plan better."
Month-by-Month Guide: Best Time to Visit Zanzibar
Zanzibar has a tropical climate with two dry seasons and two rainy seasons. Here’s a complete month-by-month breakdown:
January – February
Hot, Sunny & Festive
These are the hottest months, with daytime temperatures between 30–33°C. There’s minimal rain, just occasional brief showers. The sea is warm, calm, and crystal-clear, making it perfect for snorkeling and diving. This is peak festive season, so it’s busy and a bit pricier. Great for beach relaxation, water sports, kite surfing, and photography.
Aloyce says: ” January and February bring hot sun and warm seas. Perfect for swimming and diving, with festive energy everywhere.”
March
Start of Long Rains – Quieter Island
March is warm but gradually gets wetter as the long rainy season begins. You’ll see fewer crowds and better hotel deals. The landscape turns lush green, which is great for photography. Note that many beach lodges start closing around this time.
” Rains start in March, but the island greens up and the crowds vanish. My time to enjoy Zanzibar in peace.” Aloyce narrates.
April
Wettest Month – Consider Avoiding
April is the wettest month, with heavy afternoon downpours and around 401mm of rainfall. It’s the quietest month with the lowest prices, and most beach lodges are closed. Only recommend this for budget travelers who want peace and quiet and don’t mind the rain.
May
Long Rains Continue – Cool & Wet
Rain continues through May, with heavy, prolonged rainfall. Temperatures start dropping. You’ll find the fewest tourists and the best prices. Again, this works for budget travelers seeking peace and quiet, but not ideal for beach holidays.

Zanzibar in April and May is Great for budget travelers.
Aloyce is honest about it: “If you love sunshine, avoid these months. This is when the island takes a break.”
June
Start of Dry Season – Lodges Reopen
The rains end and the island dries up. Temperatures are pleasant at 25–28°C, with light showers possible but mostly dry weather. Beach lodges reopen and tourism picks up. This is a great time for beach holidays, snorkeling, diving, and spice tours.
Aloyce says: ” June is my favorite. The rains stop, the air feels fresh, and the island wakes up again.”
July – August – September
Cool, Dry & Ideal – Best Time to Visit
These are the best months overall. The weather is cool, dry, and low in humidity, with temperatures between 20–30°C. Rainfall is minimal (under 53mm per month), skies stay clear, and the sea is calm. It’s peak season, popular for safari combinations. Perfect for beach holidays, diving, snorkeling, and combining safari with beach time.
“Blue skies, cool breeze, perfect sea. This is when everyone should come to Zanzibar.” Aloyce lightens up.
October
Warm & Dry – Heat Building
Generally dry, but temperatures rise toward the end of the month. There’s a slight increase in rain at the end of October. Still good for travel with fewer crowds than July through September. Great for beach weather before the short rains start.
November
Short Rains Begin – Affordable Escape
Warm and mostly sunny with passing showers. The short rains are brief, mostly happening in the mornings or evenings. Fewer tourists, lush green landscapes. Good for quiet beach walks, cultural experiences, and budget travel.
December
Hot, Festive & Busy
Hot, sunny, and humid with temperatures rising. Short rains continue but are brief, followed by blue skies. This is peak holiday season with Christmas and New Year celebrations, festive atmosphere, and beach parties. Great for holiday celebrations, kite surfing, and water sports.
Aloyce says: “October starts warm and mostly dry, the perfect last chance before the short rains. November brings quick morning or evening showers, but the island stays green and peaceful with lower prices. By December, the heat returns and the whole island comes alive with festive energy for Christmas and New Year. Together, these three months take you from quiet beach time into the heart of Zanzibar’s celebration season.”
