How does EMCS Make A Difference?
East Meru Community School began in a donated, renovated cowshed in Maruvango, a remote village in Tanzania’s Meru District. Its purpose is simple but powerful: to provide children from disadvantaged homes with free, high-quality English-medium primary education, helping transform their lives, families, and wider community. The school has a unique approach to education, focusing not just on academics but also on character development, instilling values such as respect, hard work, and community service. For example, students engage in local projects that enhance their learning experience while benefiting the community.
AOL partners with East Meru Community School because it reflects the education pillar of the AOL 50% Impact Model and creates meaningful impact at the grassroots level. The school gives children in a remote rural community the opportunity to learn, grow, and build a different future while allowing AOL customers to experience a more personal side of Tanzania beyond iconic landscapes like Mount Kilimanjaro and Tanzania’s famous safari landscapes. This partnership demonstrates how corporate responsibility can align with community needs, showcasing the importance of education in breaking the cycle of poverty.
The commitment of East Meru Community School to quality education extends beyond traditional learning. The school emphasizes experiential learning through outdoor activities, cultural exchange programs, and community service projects. Ian Horne, a teacher from the United Kingdom, founded EMCS. In 2005, Ian visited Tanzania to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and raise funds for a home for street children. Seeing the poverty faced by rural families inspired him to do more. Together with friends and local village leaders, he decided that education was the most effective way to create lasting change. With land donated by his brother-in-law, the vision for East Meru Community School became a reality. Ian’s journey from mountaineer to educator exemplifies the power of individual initiative in creating impactful change.
The project later established “Tikundane”, a Tanzanian NGO whose name means “love each other” in Kimeru, one of the local ethnic tribes in Tanzania. The organisation brings together trustees from Tanzania, the UK, Canada, and Australia and legally owns the school. Tikundane plays a crucial role in ensuring the sustainability and growth of the school, fostering international relationships that enhance educational opportunities for the students.
As part of its mission, East Meru Community School not only aims to educate children but also to empower their families, offering workshops and resources that strengthen community ties and promote lifelong learning. This holistic model of education reinforces the idea that change begins at the community level, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and support.
