The School of St Jude plays a crucial role in shaping the future of Tanzanian youth. In the foothills of Mount Meru in Arusha, Tanzania, an ambitious idea took root: that poverty should not determine a child’s future. From this vision grew The School of St Jude, a pioneering educational institution founded in 2002 by Australian humanitarian Gemma Sisia. What began as a bold response to extreme poverty has developed into a far-reaching movement that uses education to transform individual lives, families and communities.
Today, School of St Jude provides free, high-quality education to approximately 1,800 bright and deserving Tanzanian students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The school operates across three campuses, offers boarding facilities to all secondary students and employs more than 300 Tanzanian staff. Its educational model is designed not only to help students succeed academically, but also to prepare them to become ethical, confident and socially responsible leaders.
Gemma Sisia’s journey toward founding St Jude’s was shaped by her belief that education could be one of the most powerful tools for fighting poverty. During an earlier visit to Tanzania, she encountered the daily hardships faced by families who lacked access to quality schooling. She saw talented children whose potential was constrained not by ability, but by poverty.
Rather than accepting this situation as inevitable, Gemma imagined a school where children from the most disadvantaged communities could receive the same opportunities available to students in wealthier countries. The vision was radical in its simplicity: identify academically capable children, provide them with a first-class education at no cost to their families and equip them to create positive change in Tanzania.
In 2002, she established The School of St Jude. The school was named after St Jude, the patron saint of hope and difficult causes, a fitting symbol for an institution founded to confront one of society’s most persistent challenges: the cycle of poverty.
Gemma Sisia’s vision has resulted in the creation of a nurturing environment where students can flourish. The school emphasizes experiential learning, encouraging students to participate in projects that have real-world applications. For example, students engage in environmental conservation efforts, learning about sustainability while contributing positively to their local communities.
To further illustrate the impact of education, the school organizes annual events that showcase student achievements. These celebrations not only highlight academic success but also recognize the development of personal growth and leadership skills. Students take part in exhibitions, performances, and competitions that draw in the community and foster pride in their accomplishments.
