When is the best time to visit Victoria Falls?

Honestly, there is no bad time to visit Victoria Falls. But timing your trip well makes a real difference to what you experience.

If witnessing raw, untamed power is your priority, visit between February and May. The Zambezi is in full flood after the summer rains, and the falls transform into something almost incomprehensible. The roar is deafening, the mist soaks you within minutes, and the sheer scale of water pouring over the edge is unlike anything else on earth. Views from the ground can be limited by spray, so this is the season to book a helicopter tour and see it all from above.

From June to October the water levels drop, the mist clears, and the full dramatic face of the falls comes into view. This is also the sweet spot for adventure. Devil’s Pool opens up, white water rafting on the Zambezi is at its best, and the surrounding national parks offer some of the finest game viewing in southern Africa. The weather is warm and dry, and the energy around the falls feels electric.

November through January is quieter, greener, and cheaper. Afternoon thunderstorms roll in most days, some activities close, but the landscape is lush and the falls are beginning to build again. For the right traveller, it is a genuinely special time to visit.

About Victoria Falls: Africa’s Most Spectacular Natural Wonder

Victoria Falls sits on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia in southern Africa, where the mighty Zambezi River plunges over 100 metres into a narrow basalt gorge, unleashing a curtain of mist and thunder that can be seen and heard from miles away. Known to the local Tonga people as Mosi-oa-Tunya, the Smoke That Thunders, it is one of the most breathtaking natural wonders of the world, and one of the most sought-after adventure travel destinations in Africa.

Beyond the falls themselves, Victoria Falls is a gateway to world-class safari country. Victoria Falls safari lodges offer unforgettable bush experiences on the banks of the Zambezi, iconic wildlife roams the surrounding national parks of Hwange and Chobe, and the warm hospitality of Zimbabwe and Zambia makes every Victoria Falls holiday as welcoming as it is wild.
