If you are visiting the Kruger region for safari, you will spot most of Africa’s most exotic animals including, elephants, lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, rhinos, buffalo, and many bird species across most national parks and reserves. Kruger is particularly famous for big cat sightings.

Private reserves usually offer a more exclusive experience than the public sections of Kruger National Park. By limiting visitors and allowing a maximum number of vehicles at each wildlife sighting (often 2 – 4), the experience at a private reserve feels intimate and wild.

The public park on the other hand has many bitumen roads, is often over-crowded, particularly on public holidays and weekends, and is known to have large crowds around big cat sightings. The public sections are good if you are on a budget, but the private reserves offer a much more authentic experience.

There is a huge variation in private game reserves. Some operate as legitimate wildlife conservation project, and others operate more like an open-air zoo or animal farm.

The Greater Kruger Region is by far the best place to safari in South Africa. The private reserves that border Kruger National Park offer a fantastic safari experience for every budget.

Smaller reserves closer to Cape Town on the other hand can be hit and miss. For a first-timer they may be ok, but the experience is not like a “real” safari.
